Knowledge and Understanding of the World We will use a variety of contexts which will help the children to be actively involved in making sense of their world. Our global themes will reflect the interests and experiences of the children and will evolve gradually, using the children as the starting point.
The World Around Us The World Beyond
· investigate · observe · ask questions · name objects and categorise them · use their senses to find out more · experiment and design · solve problems · record information simply eg drawings and model making · count, sort, match, compare, and sequence ·
recognise colours, shapes and patterns
· visiting local places of interest eg shops, the library, the post office, Whin Park, Nairn Beach · welcoming visitors eg the lollipop man, the dentist, the school nurse · caring for plants and looking for creatures from the natural environment eg caterpillars, worms · looking for changes all around eg the seasons, their own growth · using a variety of investigative resources eg magnifying glasses, computer, reference books At all times we
will encourage the children to be healthy and safe by: · providing healthy snacks ·
giving opportunities for active, energetic play, both indoors and
outside · attending Safe, Strong and Free Workshops · establishing routines for good hygiene eg hand washing Through all the experiences on offer to the children we hope to create an environment in which the children can develop an appreciation of and respect for the world around them.
