  SCHOOL POLICY ON PUPIL REPORTS

Effective reporting to parents, pupils and staff is essential if our children are to receive an education that meets the needs of the whole child and takes account of parental views.

Our aims to meet the above:

1                    To ensure effective, meaningful communication of our pupils’ progress to parents, pupils and other teaching staff.

2                    To assist parents, pupils and teachers in identifying the pupil’s next steps in learning.

3                    To enlighten parents as to the aims of the school and its objectives in terms of imparting skills, attitudes and knowledge.

Our audience:  (Who are our reports for and why?)

1        Pupils:                 In order that they can see what progress they have made and where their learning will go next.

2        Parents:              In order that parents have as full a picture as possible of their child’s progress and, working in collaboration with the class teacher identify their child’s future learning needs.  It is also a vehicle for discussion at parents’ evenings in February/March.

3        Staff:                   In order to assist in identifying attainment levels and future learning and teaching.  It is a useful focus for discussion with pupils and parents.

Primary Class Reporting

When:

Verbal Reports:

1               A verbal report should be given at parents’ evenings in November and May.

2               Further verbal reports should be given at pre-arranged meetings at the request of parent or teacher. Any parent who wishes a meeting after the issue of a written report can request a meeting.

3               Curriculum workshops/demonstrations are held as necessary under the heading of ‘Support for Parents’ where an explanation of aspects of the curriculum will be given.

Though described as parents’ evenings there is an evening and a late afternoon session allowing the choice of the more suitable time for parents.

Written Report:

Parents receive a written report on the progress of their children prior to the May parents’ evenings.

The report should include the following:

3               Record attendance.

4               Teachers general comment.

5               Next steps.

6               Comments on how parents can help at home.

In the report there are boxes for teachers’ comments.  These should include a general comment about progress in main curricular areas and highlight any difficulties or strengths. It should include a comment about personal and social development.

The ‘next steps’ box should include:

¨      Next steps for language

¨      Next steps for mathematics

¨      Next steps in areas where the teacher feels advice/information is necessary

Comments on ‘how parents can help at home’ box could be related to next steps and ways parents could help pupils achieve these, e.g. through activities/games; supporting homework; encouraging reading every night; providing suitable materials, encouraging independence skills, etc.

Reporting of levels to parents:

An explanation of symbols and codes used in reporting levels to parents will be included in the written reports and will be explained, if necessary, at the verbal report stage
