Sickness or injury of a pupil at School

Procedure to be followed in the event of sickness

1.                  Inform ‘school office’ of illness details.

2.                  School Secretary, Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher or Class Teacher contact pupil’s parent or emergency contact to advise that he/she is unwell.

3.                  Pupils should be picked up at the school by a responsible adult.  If this is not possible then the Head Teacher, a member or staff or some other responsible person should take the child home or to emergency contact.

4.                  Pupils should not be left at home until it is clear that there is an adult in the house.

Procedure to be followed in the event of injury or serious illness requiring specialist medical treatment

1.                  Inform ‘school office’ of injury or illness.  In the event of anything other than a minor injury the Head Teacher or Depute Head Teacher should be informed.

2.                  If the injury or illness is severe and the pupil cannot be taken to hospital he/she should be made comfortable and the duty doctor or an ambulance sent for.

If the pupil requires examination/treatment and may be moved the accident and emergency department at the Dunbar Hospital should be informed in advance, by telephone, and the pupil taken there.

When taking a pupil to the hospital without the parent it is essential that the pupil’s emergency form is consulted.  This will give the pupil’s Doctor’s name and should indicate any allergies or existing medical conditions.

3.                  The parent or emergency contact should be informed at the earliest opportunity of the injury/illness.  This should normally happen before the child is taken for treatment but there should be no delay in taking a pupil to hospital if the condition requires urgent treatment or if the child is likely to be distressed by waiting for an parent or emergency contact to come to the school.  When contacted the parent or emergency contact may meet the child at the hospital.

4.         The accident book should be completed at the earliest opportunity in the case of injury.  Serious illness should be logged in the day book and will also be recorded at the school office.

Procedure to be followed in the event of an injury requiring First Aid

1.                  Most injuries at school are of the minor cuts and bruises type and do not require medical assistance.  However, if in doubt staff should follow the procedure above.

2.                  The minor injury should be treated at the school office by a responsible adult using the materials from the First Aid box.

3.                  Should the child be distressed or need to go home due to the injury but not require specialist medical attention the procedure as for illness should be followed.
